Our Breeding History and Health Issues with Puppy Photo Album

Between
our two farms, we have five chessies. Two at Cedar Ridge, and three
at Willowynd. Our three foundation dogs remain with us and two
puppies from past litters live with us. At Willowynd, we have three
chessies, Castle Rock's Golden Guinness, Castle Rock's Gypsy Traveler, and
Castle Rock's Pop (daughter of Guinness and Granddaughter of Gypsy).
At Cedar Ridge lives Castle Rock's Reilly O'Hara and her daughter, Sweet
Georgia Brown. Below are descriptions of all these dogs. All
of our chessies are now spayed or neutered.
Castle Rock's Golden Guinness Color: Sedge DOB: 2/22/99 Guinness has sired three litters for us. He is a sweet but LARGE chessie weighing over 100 pounds when fully filled out. He stands 27 inches at the shoulder and his main strength is water retrieving. He is a powerful swimmer with a great chessie coat and great conformation. His pedigree is awesome and his offspring are competing in field trials, hunting, obedience, conformation ring, and agility. He is a truly all purpose dog with a wonderful sweet temperament. He is good with strangers and our small dogs and cats. Well.....he sort of likes to play hunt the cats from time to time but it is more stalking than actual hunting! He is the keeper of the yard and also the keeper of order among Pop, Gypsy, and the two Tatra Sheepdogs, Pancia and Pyskata. Castle Rock's Gypsy Traveler Color: Light Deadgrass DOB: 3/30/99 Gypsy has produced two exceptional litters for us and her daughter from her first litter has produced an outstanding litter for us as well. Gyps is the yard matron. She is Guinness's partner and she rules as Alpha bitch. She is definitely our most lovey chessie. She loves everyone and most everything except she likes for her space to be respected in the yard. She is the most naturally driven chessie we have when it comes to retrieving. She is submissive to Guinness but as an individual is an incredible swimmer, powerful retriever, and agile athlete. She can jump almost 5 feet straight into the air from a standing position! And ask the owner's of her offspring - She definitely passes that trait on! Castle Rock's Reilly O'Hara Color: Brown DOB: 3/26/99 Reilly is by far one of the smartest dogs I have ever seen. Obedience was almost remedial for her. She is a natural heeler and it has taken just a bit of fine tuning to prepare her to the point she could get her CD. She will hunt, retrieve, track...whatever you ask her because she is interested only in pleasing her handler, whatever the task he/she asks! She has incredible water entry and loves to play and retrieve with her buddies. She has an excellent temperament perfectly behaved with strangers and strange dogs both on our property and in public. Her daughter, Georgia is also incredibly smart and wiley like her mom and together they are a joy to be around. One drawback to having such clever dogs is that they demand chores to keep them busy. If they do not have tasks to do, then they tend to do things we do not like such as collecting and piling up rocks (and I mean big ones!) in the yard, digging crater like holes in the yard, and chewing up water hoses. Castle Rock's Pop Color: Sedge DOB: 5/23/02 Pop is a gorgeous sedge bitch out of Gypsy's daughter Lil Bit, and Guinness. I am a bit ashamed to say, but I had predicted Pop would only ever be pet quality because her coat was so straight as a baby. Well I was wrong. She is a wonderful bitch. Good conformation, great coat, and drive like her parents! She is a sweet and agile dog loving to play with her yard mates and fascinated as all our dogs are with the cats! Pop was returned to us at the age of 18 months by her owners. I will not go into the details but suffice it to say they were having "temperament" issues with her. I do not know what happened in her home to cause the behavior the owner's described but I will simply say that we have been unable to reproduce those behaviors and have been extremely pleased with Pop and her behavior both with my young son, our friends, and our other dogs. Pop is dominant by nature. Guinness re-established her position in our household as low dog on the totem pole. Since her introduction, she has not required any reprimands for rough play or for bullying and has melded right in with everyone. Sweet Georgia Brown Color: Brown DOB: 12/12/02 Georgia was returned to us by her owners at the age of three months. She was diagnosed at that time with suspected mild hip dysplasia in her left hip. Her x-rays showed a mild laxity in that hip but no arthritic changes that would be consistent with her severe symptoms. Our vet took x-rays several months later which showed the same laxity but again no arthritic changes that would account for her sever pain in that hip. We stopped all medicine. Put her on Eagle Pack Natural dog food which we recommend for all our chessies, and started her on a supplemental Gloucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM treat every day. We also had her spine examined for defects since her involvement seemed to be in both legs and not just one. Since the other hip looks fine on x-ray, we really don't have a good explanation for her rear quarter problems. The vets seem to think now that an early injury probably during play caused nerve damage near the base of the spine and is the reason for both hind limbs being involved. On her new diet, and the supplements, Georgia leads a pretty normal life. She is stiff in the morning, for a few minutes but then after walking around she seems fine. She runs and plays just like the other dog except she will get sore if she overdoes it. Other than that she is an extremely wiley and clever pup. The other dogs are very tolerant and careful with her, even Pop.
