I have tried to summarize below a comparative history of our longhair dachshund litters with pictures and descriptions  as well as a detail of health issues and or whelping problems encountered with each litter.  I do not believe that breeders should hide or be ashamed of health issues that arise from a breeding.  The only way to combat health issues in a breed is for breeders to honestly share what they know about their dogs and their breeding history.  No breeding is perfect and you should always be wary of a breeder that claims no issues or concerns with their dogs.  It should be obvious that the breeder has taken steps to minimize the occurrence of issues and is willing to alter their breeding program as necessary to prevent or reduce future occurrences of a known problem.

First litter born 1-31-02, 2 females and one male.  No whelping issues, all pups born with minimal assistance from me.  All pups vigorous and healthy at birth with no visible birth defects.  One female puppy born with no pigment in nose eye, or foot pad leather, other two pups had dark pigment from birth.  No kinked tails and no hernias.  All three pups developed good bites and the male had two testicles down at 8 weeks of age.  It was later found that the male puppy did develop a luxating patella and was removed from further breeding programs.

Second litter born 6-1-03.  Three females living and a fourth puppy stillborn, sex undetermined.  Puppies were larger in birth weight this time and labor was progressing slowly and contractions were weak and required supplemental oxytocin with each birth.  The third and final female pup born that evening was not breathing but against odds we were able to revive her and she suffered no long term effects.  We ended with three live females that evening and given the uterine cramping and the fact that oxytocin elicited no further contractions, we called it a night.  When Wispa was acting a little off the next day I decided that she should see the vet  later that day.  When I went in to check on her, I saw the cause of her discomfort.  She had delivered a partially decomposed fourth puppy after resting for a day.  We immediately went off to the vet who confirmed that the uterus was now empty , started her on an antibiotic to prevent infection, and the rest of the lactation and post whelping went without complication.  Of this litter of three females, one puppy was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia and placed in a pet home.  The other two pups were hernia free. None of the puppies had kinked tails and bites were good for all pups.

Our third cream litter was born October 12, 2003.  There were two boys in this litter both born with good pigment, no hernias, no kinked tails.  Echo went into labor on her due date but as a first time mom, she suppressed her contractions because they caused her pain.  After a couple of hours of no progress, I took her to the vet.  A shot of calcium and oxytocin brought the darker male into the world.  After another couple of hours with no progress, it was determined that Echo should have a c-section to get the other puppy.  Our vet said that the breadth of the second puppy's head was so large that she was unable to pass him through the birth canal.  Both pups were healthy and vigorous at birth and mom recovered quickly and was an excellent mother to her two growing boys.   There were no complications following the birth and c-section.  At 2.5 months of age, both boys have full pigment, no hernias, no kinked tails, good bites, and both testicles down.
