Knowing that we would need fearless guardians to protect our horses and property, we immediately began searching for a dog to watch over us. In 2000, we found the Polish Tatra Sheepdog (Owczarek Podhalanski) and began researching what little was published about the breed. Most of what we did find was published By Maria and Zbigniew Zdziennicka in Lodz, Poland. With Ron's Polish ancestry and family, and given that the Tatra is quite a rare breed (somewhat less than 2,000 worldwide and less than 300 in the US), we decided that this dog would be the right match for our guardian needs.

We contacted a Polish breeder and were put right on her puppy waiting list for her next litter. That fall, we imported sisters, Pancia and Pyskata, our gorgeous Polar Bear dogs from Warsaw, Poland. We asked breeders, Maria and Zbigniew Zdziennicka, to teach us obedience commands in Polish and we spoke to the girls in their native language!

We are so grateful to Maria and Zbigniew for our big, beautiful, girls. We joined the Polish Tatra Sheepdog Club of America and have been to the Pet Expo at Chicago Racetrack a couple of times to exhibit them with the club. Thanks to Carol Wood with the PTSCA for her help and information concerning the ownership and care of these wonderful dogs!

Though we originally considered breeding them, we quickly realized that breeding and rearing Dachshunds is too time consuming even between two farms to give due diligence to breeding Tatras in such a way as to enhance the breed and deal with potential health issues. Both of our girls are spayed and to this day, they remain our faithful guardians and loyal protectors.
